Your soul urge number is the vowels of your full birth name, added up and reduced. It is also called the heart’s desire number, and it is the one position in a numerology chart that describes what you actually want rather than what you do or how you come across. Where the life path number is the road and the destiny number is the equipment, this one is the motive.
Take every vowel in your full birth name, convert each to a digit with the grid (A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3), add them, and reduce to one digit — keeping 11, 22 or 33. The consonants of the same name give your personality number, and all the letters together give your destiny number. Those three must close: vowels plus consonants equals the whole name.

How to calculate your soul urge number
Write out your full birth name. Pull out only the vowels. Convert each with the grid, add them, and reduce.

Worked example — MARIA ELENA SANTOS:
- MARIA: A, I, A = 1 + 9 + 1 = 11
- ELENA: E, E, A = 5 + 5 + 1 = 11
- SANTOS: A, O = 1 + 6 = 7
- Total: 11 + 11 + 7 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11, a master number, so it stays
Soul urge 11. And the check: the consonants of the same name total 30, which reduces to 3 — the personality number. 29 + 30 = 59, which reduces to 5, the destiny number. If your three numbers do not close like that, one of them is wrong.
The order matters more than people think. Add each name’s vowels first, then add the names together — do not reduce each name before adding. Reducing early loses master numbers: MARIA gives 11, and a practitioner who reduced it to 2 straight away would end up somewhere else entirely. This is the single most common arithmetic mistake in soul urge calculation.
What every soul urge number means

What you want, where wanting it goes wrong, and the thing that usually has to change.
Soul urge 1 — you want to have done it yourself. Not credit exactly. Authorship. A soul urge 1 can be miserable in a comfortable, well-paid role for reasons that sound ungrateful out loud, because the job is fine and the wanting is about something the job cannot supply.
Where it goes wrong: refusing help that would have made the thing better, so the authorship stays intact and the work stays worse. What changes it: noticing that a collaborator is not a co-owner.
Soul urge 2 — you want one person who really knows you. Not a crowd, not an audience. One. Twos with this number will trade a great deal of external success for a relationship in which they do not have to explain themselves.
Where it goes wrong: becoming so accommodating that the person never meets you, and then feeling unseen by someone you never let see you. What changes it: saying one uncomfortable true thing.
Soul urge 3 — you want to be heard. To make something and have it land. The wanting is not vanity; it is closer to a need for the inside to reach the outside in a form somebody else can receive.
Where it goes wrong: performing instead of saying, so the thing that gets heard is not the thing that needed saying. What changes it: finishing one piece of work without an audience in mind.
Soul urge 4 — you want solid ground. Not luxury. Certainty: money that will still be there, a roof that is not conditional, a plan that holds. This is the least glamorous of the twelve and one of the most honest.
Where it goes wrong: the ground is never solid enough, so the saving never stops and the living never starts. What changes it: naming the number at which you would actually feel safe, and noticing whether you passed it years ago.
Soul urge 5 — you want the door left unlocked. Often not to leave. Just to know you could. A soul urge 5 will stay somewhere for years quite happily as long as nothing formally closes off the alternatives.
Where it goes wrong: refusing commitments that would have cost nothing, and calling the refusal freedom. What changes it: choosing one thing on purpose and watching what depth feels like.
Soul urge 6 — you want to matter to the people you love. To be the one they call. This is the warmest of the twelve and the one most likely to be quietly exhausted, because being needed and being loved get filed in the same drawer.
Where it goes wrong: earning the place instead of occupying it, so the care becomes a bill nobody agreed to. What changes it: letting someone do something for you and not repaying it.
Soul urge 7 — you want to understand. Not to be told; to know. A soul urge 7 will take a worse job with a more interesting problem in it and be unable to explain the decision to anyone.
Where it goes wrong: understanding becomes a substitute for living, and the examined life stops being lived. What changes it: acting on something you have not finished analysing.
Soul urge 8 — you want the capacity to make things happen. Money is usually the form it takes, but the wanting underneath is about not being at the mercy of anyone’s decision but your own.
Where it goes wrong: the scoreboard becomes the point, and enough recedes at exactly the speed you approach it. What changes it: deciding, in advance and in writing, what the power is for.
Soul urge 9 — you want it to have counted. For someone, somewhere, to be better off. A soul urge 9 struggles more than any other number with work that helps nobody, however well it pays.
Where it goes wrong: giving to a cause becomes a way of avoiding the person in the room. What changes it: doing one small, unglamorous, specific kindness that nobody will hear about.
Soul urge 11 — the 2’s wanting, aimed higher. You want closeness, and you want it to be about something. An 11 here often reports feeling that ordinary relationships are not quite the point, without being able to say what the point is.
The work: grounding it. An 11 that never lands stays a mood. Read master number 11 alongside the 2.
Soul urge 22 — the 4’s wanting, at scale. Security, but for more people than yourself. The 22 wants to build the thing that keeps standing, and finds personal comfort a slightly embarrassing goal.

Soul urge 33 — the 6’s wanting, past the household. To be of use to something larger than one family. The rarest of the twelve in this position and the hardest to say aloud without sounding grand.

Soul urge vs personality vs destiny
These three come from the same name and are constantly confused with each other. The difference is only which letters you use.

The gap between soul urge and personality is the most useful reading in the chart. A soul urge 7 with a personality 3 is a private, questioning person who reads as sociable and easy — and who is quietly tired after parties they appeared to enjoy. A soul urge 3 with a personality 7 is the opposite: somebody who wants to be heard and comes across as reserved, and who is regularly not asked the question they were hoping for.
The Y problem
This is the largest unresolved disagreement in name numerology, and it will change your answer.
Y is sometimes a vowel and sometimes a consonant in English. The two positions in the literature are:
- Y is always a consonant. Simple, consistent, and what most calculators do — including the one above.
- Y is a vowel when no other vowel is doing the work in that syllable. So the Y in Lynn or Bryn counts, but the Y in Maya or Rylan does not, because A is already the vowel there.
Y is worth 7. Moving a single Y from one side to the other shifts the soul urge by 7 and the personality by the same 7 in the opposite direction. For a name like LYNN MYERS — where almost every vowel sound is carried by a Y — the two conventions do not produce a near-miss. They produce unrelated readings.
What the disagreement actually tells you. If two conventions that are both considered correct hand you two different numbers for the same name, the number is not being found in the name. It is being assigned by a rule someone chose. That does not make the exercise worthless, but it does relocate what it is: a structured prompt built out of a spelling, not a measurement of an essence. The same is true of the W in Bowen and the accent in Zoë.
Which name, and does the middle name count?
The standard answer is the full name exactly as registered at birth, middle names included, spelled as the registrar spelled it — even if nobody has used it since.
That produces three practical problems, and it is better to know about them than to find out later:
- Middle names you never use. Including or dropping one usually changes the soul urge. There is no principled reason to drop it, so include it — but notice that your reading was one clerk’s decision away from being different.
- Spelling variants. Catherine and Katherine differ by one letter. So do Sara and Sarah — and the H is a consonant, so that one moves the personality rather than the soul urge.
- Names not written in the Latin alphabet. The grid was built for twenty-six English letters in 1908. A Turkish, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Korean or Russian name has to be romanised first, and different romanisations give different numbers with nothing to choose between them.
If you have changed your name, the birth-name soul urge is treated as the fixed one, and the current name number is read as a second, present-tense layer. Both are worth calculating; they are answering different questions.
Is there a rarest soul urge number?
You will find pages that name one. Be sceptical of them.
Life path rarity can be settled by counting, because there are only so many calendar dates and anyone can run all of them — which is exactly what we did for master number 33. Soul urge rarity cannot be settled that way, because it depends on the population of names, and that changes by country, language, generation and fashion. A distribution built on English names from the 1950s says nothing about Turkish names, or about babies born this year.
What can be said honestly: A is worth 1 and E is worth 5, and they are by a wide margin the most common vowels in names written in the Latin alphabet, so soul urge totals cluster rather than spreading evenly. The master numbers 22 and 33 need unusually high vowel totals and are correspondingly uncommon. Beyond that, anyone quoting a precise percentage for soul urge numbers has either done a study they are not citing or made it up.
Soul urge compatibility
Comparing soul urge numbers between two people is more informative than comparing life paths, because it compares what each person actually wants rather than what happens to them.

The caveat that belongs on every compatibility reading: there is no evidence that numerological matching predicts relationship outcomes. Studies of astrological sun-sign matching, the closest well-researched analogue, have consistently found no effect on marital satisfaction or stability. What these readings supply is vocabulary — a way to name a recurring argument without either person being at fault.
What to do with your soul urge number
- Calculate all three name numbers and check that vowels plus consonants equal the whole name. If they do not close, one is wrong.
- If your name has a Y, run it both ways. Read both and notice which one you recognise — that recognition is the only evidence available.
- Compare soul urge with personality. The gap between what you want and how you land is where most of the useful information is.
- Find one concrete example from the past month of the “where it goes wrong” line for your number. If you cannot find one, the reading is not about you.
- Leave it two weeks and reread. Whatever still fits when the novelty has gone is worth taking seriously.
